I've been working on Juhani from KOTOR for the last 9 months and she is finally complete. I debuted her at CONvergence 2009 and won Honorable Mention for Best Craftmanship at the masquerade.
This costume was a lot of firsts for me, primarily in leather working and prosthetics. The amazing and wonderful Shuu helped me get ready, and it took us over four hours to get me totally made up and dresses. That's what I get for double bald caps.
Hi there, I'm doing a Juhani cosplay of my own this year, and I was wondering if you had any advice on how to make the ponytail-baldcap. I'm struggling to find advice online that doesn't require using my actual hair, and I'd like to be able to re-wear it (my hair is naturally blonde, so I'd have to dye it if I were to use it) and you seem to have done such an excellent job, I was wondering if you had any pro-tips? I'd really, really appreciate it.
Huzzah! Another Juhani. I'm super excited to hear of another.
I did something of a write-up on the headpiece here: [link]
But, in summary, I pinned my hair up against my head, sprayed it there, removed the pins, put on a wig cap for good measure, and then had this ponytail get-up using wig fibers, work that ponytail through two layers of bald caps, and top it all off with some crepe wool for the stripes.
You can *kind of* see what I did here. [link] I regret not having better pictures of my hairpiece, but it's in storage right now at my parents' house while I am away at grad school. I realized early on that the ponytail is too heavy to just clip into place on the crown of your head, so I ran a double strip of tulle (probably 1.5" wide by 6" long) from the ponytail up to the front of my head and secured the front of it close to my hairline with three of those metal pop hair clips, and then three more at the ponytail. That kept it from sliding forward.
Please do let me know if you have any other questions. And, when you're done (or even as you're working on it), I invited you to come join us at the Rebel Legion [link] in taking out Star Wars costumes to do lots of charity support events. I'd love to not be the only Juhani in the legion any more.
Thank you so much! And I would love to join the legion, it sounds like a great cause! I'm actually making this costume to go with two of my friends, who are respectively making Mission and Bastilla costumes, so I'll see if they'd be interested in joining too when they get their costumes done. I probably wont get to start on Juhani for at least another month due to money issues at the moment, but I'll definitely make sure to talk to you if I have any more questions as I work on the project. Thanks again SO much, you have been a huge help to me!

Good luck with all of that!
